Fireplace Sand

This man-made silica sand filters the gas and spreads out the flame to keep the log set quiet, prevent excess sooting and to begin the process of holding the heat in the fireplace. Glass silica sand is NOT used in propane gas log assemblies. Propane is heavier than air and will not filter through the sand – but remain trapped in the sand and cause delayed ignition.
Silica sand may also be used on the floor of a fireplace for a beach or Zen garden look.
